1. Noodgevallen diensten: Eerste hulp, search & rescue, ongevallen nazorg
2. Transport: Openbaar vervoer & delen, Slimmer rijden, logistiek & distributie
3. Internet of Things: connected health, smart cities, smart landbouw

Start-up angst

“YES!Delft is one of the best business incubators in the world. They add an exceptional amount of value for entrepreneurs in the program and have a great impact on the regional economy.” vertelde co-founder Dhruv Bhatli van UBI index.

ESA BIC shows potential of space at the Hannover Messe
People benefit daily from space technology. And not only through satellite navigation in cars or live sports events on television. The possibilities for applications are endless, says Martijn Seijger, director of space incubator ESA BIC in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. At the Hannover Messe he will show the world how Dutch space applications are making our lives more efficient, safer and more enjoyable.
ESA BIC encourages budding entrepreneurs to take technologies originally developed for space or applications for satellite data, and develop them for terrestrial applications. This is done in cooperation with, amongst others, ESA and NSO.
Can you give an example of such an innovative space application?
‘One of the start-ups we have invited to present at the Hannover Messe is Social Charging. With his company, Gert Jan Geurts is developing an app that is going to change electric cars. Electric car owners all have the same questions: where can I charge my car? What is the precise location of the charging station, and is it already in use? And if so, when will it be available again? This kind of information is not currently available, but will be provided by the Social Charging app. A community of electric drivers will be created. This is interesting for the users themselves, but also for advertisers and infrastructure owners.’
Is this a typical example of companies that participate in ESA BIC?
‘The ESA BIC technology transfer programme has a broad scope. Space has many different applications in our society. Although many companies focus on applications that use Earth observation data and satellite navigation. So using satellite data to develop new or more efficient activities in agriculture, energy, infrastructure and mobility.’
How will you convince businesses to invest their time and money?
‘By showing them what is already possible. At Hannover Messe, together with Verhaert Connect and Social Charging, we will talk about smart cities and smart agriculture, two areas in which satellite applications play an important role. Creative entrepreneurs already think in terms of new applications. At ESA BIC we highlight the opportunities in space by organising activities such as app challenges. These challenges last 36 hours and focus on smart mobility, smart agriculture or smart cities, where everyone can contribute to explore relevant applications of satellite data.’
Where does the Netherlands stand when it comes to space applications?
‘There’s a willingness to do business in the Netherlands. And the best kept secret of the space industry in the Netherlands is obviously ESTEC, ESA’s technical centre, in Noordwijk. The high-tech industry can benefit from the knowledge that is already present. It is not a coincidence that the ESA BIC is just a stone’s throw from ESTEC.’
When will you consider the Hannover Messe to be a success?
‘If I can convey to an international audience that the Netherlands is doing some very special things with space technology, especially the start-ups. For example, an application that helps to streamline municipal parking. And better analysis and training of professional athletes is even possible using space applications.’
Hannover Messe
The Dutch space industry will be present at the Hannover Messe from 13 to 17 April under the banner of NL Space. From rocket components, solar panels and sensors, to satellite applications and fundamental science; Dutch hardware and expertise will be a highlight at one of the world’s largest industry trade shows.
Martijn Seijger from ESA BIC will be present in the Holland High Tech House, Hall 2, on Monday 13 April until 14:00. Between 14:00 and 16:00 he will lead a workshop together with Verhaert and Social Charging in Hall 4, stand E 49.

Port of Rotterdam and YES!Delft want to connect startups to the harbour
To keep being one of the biggest ports in the world, the Port of Rotterdam teams up with business incubator YES!Delft to bring new life in the area with the Port Innovation Lab.
The ambition to connect startups to the harbour is part of a bigger plan to accelerate innovation around the Rotterdam port: the Port Innovation Lab (PIL).
Matching
In PIL ideas and startups are matched to existing businesses in the harbour area, something that wasn’t easy before. This way, startups can find a quick launching customer and the port profits from tackling business cases – which can lead to a possible spin-off from a harbour company.
According to the press release, the Port Innovation Lab wants to be on top of new technological ideas. Based on current issues in the harbour, YES!Delft will build validated business models with startups, entrepreneurs, SME’s and just about everyone with an idea.
The business development part of the programme will be in Delft, testing and networking will be done mainly in Rotterdam. “We aim for a 50-50 presence in both areas”, commercial director of YES!Delft Wouter de Bruijne told StartupJuncture.
Harbour as a hotbed
The Port of Rotterdam may be become another innovative hotbed in The Netherlands. First, there is a campus with startups already, the RDM campus, with notable inhabitants like the RDM Makerspace (3d printing), Energy Floors (the name says it all) and TU Delft spin-off Ampelmann (offshore industry).
Second, the cooperation between Delft and Rotterdam is a great match, as the Delft incubator already has a lot of potential when it comes to startups that can help the Port of Rotterdam. OCRS for example, which makes a biodegradable spray to remove spilled oil from seawater. Holland Container Innovations, which makes foldable containers and Vizionz, which makes foundations for offshore wind turbines.

First Dutch startup visa presented to New Zealand entrepreneur
This afternoon Secretary of State Fred Teeven presents the first Dutch startup visa to Finn Hansen from New Zealand, founder of Med Canvas.
StartupJuncture first reported on the new Dutch startup visa in December 2014. Over the following weeks, the article attracted quite a lot of attention. If visitor numbers are any indication, visa law is indeed a hot topic!
Dutch minister Henk Kamp of Economic Affairs said this about the startup visa: “With this startup visa, the Netherlands will be more attractive for foreign startups and growing businesses. This is important because these startups can contribute to a high quality, innovative and challenging investment climate in the Netherlands,”
The startup visa allows innovative startups from outside the European Union to stay in The Netherlands for one year, so they can develop the startup. Startups need to be backed by a facilitator, for example one of the established accelerators or incubators such as Rockstart, Startupbootcamp, Utrecht INC, YES!Delft, ESA BIC or ACE Venture Lab. After a maximum of one year, the ‘normal’ procedures may be followed to apply for a regular immigrant entrepreneur visa.
When asked In December, the Dutch government expected to receive dozens of applications for the startup visa within the first year. Hansen will be the first to receive a visa today. The entrepreneur is also former operational director of Rockstart, so it comes as no surprise that Med Canvas will be backed by Rockstart during the first year.
Nerdalize: restwarmte ICT benutten

The global startup ecosystem report is an initiative by Compass (formerly Startup Genome) and partners to rank startup ecosystems. The goal is to make the strengths and weaknesses of all ecosystems visible. The benefits for startups are twofold: in the short term it will help them make an informed decision whether to move their startup. In the long term, it should encourage countries to improve the entrepreneurial climate. You can start the survey here.
For Dutch startups it is important to have the Netherlands ranked highly, since it can help improve the funding situation in The Netherlands. Dutch startups themselves often indicated that while The Netherlands has good quality of life, access to market and access to talent, getting funded can be hard (there were many deals last year, but many smaller deals and few large VC deals from Dutch investors). A higher ranking can help attract the attention of international VCs. For this reason, we would like to ask all startups in The Netherlands to provide their input and make sure The Netherlands gets noticed.
Previous outcomes
As you can see in the attached table from the 2012 report, Silicon Vally was rated number one on all aspects:funding, company performance, talent, support, mindset and trendsetting. Runners up were Tel Aviv, Los Angeles, Seattle, New York. Highest rated European cities were London, Paris Berlin. It seems the previous report was biased towards the US and hopefully this time more European startups will provide input.
For The Netherlands, the survey comes at an interesting time. On the one hand the Dutch startup system has definitely grown: there are probably more than 1300 startups (more than half are listed in DutchStartupDatabase), more meetups, events and also more support from mainstream media. On the other hand, the same is probably true for all other startup ecosystems. Hopefully the StartupDelta initiative can help to position the Netherlands better: instead of just counting the Amsterdam activities and facilities, we should call StartupDelta an ecosystem. After all: travel times between Dutch cities are often shorter than travel times within London or Paris.
The survey can be started here and takes less than 10 minutes. It can be filled in by startups, investors and other stakeholders, and contains for instance questions on number of pitches and deal sizes, making it possible for Compass to compare cities based on actual numbers.
